Who is Jesus Really? The Descendent of Abraham & David – Lesson 5

Who is Jesus, Really? We can be assured with one more supporting Scripture that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah. Matthew, the disciple of Jesus, declares in the opening verse of his letter, “…Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” This critical element of Truth contributes to the faith that Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the entire world.

Matthew wastes no time asserting the fact that Jesus is of the lineage of David and Abraham. This declaration establishes that Jesus fulfilled GOD’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:3, “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed” (KJV) and Genesis 22:18, “Through your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have heard and obeyed My voice.” (KJV)

Paul puts forth the same explicit statement to the Galatians (3:16), “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” There is no mistaking that the disciples understood that Jesus was the promised seed of Abraham.

Regarding the promise GOD made to David, “And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.” 2 Samuel 7:12 (KJV); Psalm 89:3-4 (KJV) “I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,
4 Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.”; “The Lord swore to David A truth from which He will not turn back: ‘One of your descendants I will set upon your throne. If your children will keep My covenant And My testimony which I will teach them, Their children also shall sit upon your throne forever.’” Psalm 132:11,12 (AMP)

So, Matthew establishes the fact that Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel who is of the line of David and Abraham before he even begins to lay forth the genealogy that was so accurate and important to the Jewish people. He didn’t wait until he got to verse 16 of the letter. The most important of what he had to say was in the first verse, “…Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham” is the promised Messiah.

Now that Jesus is established as the promised seed, what is required of us as Christians? We are to accept Him as our LORD and Savior, Who has redeemed us unto GOD His Father with the price of His shed blood. Through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, it is our blessed privilege to be obedient to our LORD, our Owner, our King. Demonstrate His love by loving people as He loved us. Demonstrate our love for Him by keeping His WORD.

Children of GOD, let us remain faithful to Him through the empowering of the Spirit of GOD as we walk with Jesus today.
